(PRESERVATION) San Diego Hotel to be Preserved for Senior Housing
The San Diego Housing Authority granted approval last week to the San Diego Housing Commission for the purchase and preservation of the city's Sandford Hotel. The downtown hotel will be converted into low-income senior housing as part of the Commission's finance plan to increase San Diego's affordable housing through the acquisition of existing properties. The Commission will purchase the Sandford for $8 million and spend an estimated $5.3 million in renovations, slated to begin before the end of the year. S.D's The Centre City Development Corp. will lend the Housing Commission an additional $6 million for the project, which includes plans for seismic retrofit improvements, major wall and window repairs, and interior decorating. The hotel's downtown location places residents within minutes of transit and shopping, "so it's actually quite a green property as well," Commission president and CEO Richard Gentry tells HSR.
